What you need to know about speeding

Speeding is a big problem on UK roads and with the range of ways your speed can be detected, you don’t have to be a ‘boy-racer’ to break the law. Just a lack of attention can easily make the most law-abiding driver get points on their licence so we thought we would point out some common myths that are held about speeding and put you straight. Here goes:

– Speed cameras have to be yellow to be legal – this is nonsense, the grey ones are still legal

– You won’t get points if you’re caught speeding in a hire car – wrong! Car hire companies are duty bound to tell the authorities who was hiring the car at the time of the offence.

– Flashing your headlights to warn other drivers about speed traps is acceptable – no it isn’t. You could easily find yourself prosecuted for obstructing the police

– If you have less than 6 points on your licence you don’t have to tell your insurance company – wrong again! You are legally obliged to inform your insurance company of any points – even if it’s just going on a speed awareness course.

– I can’t be fined for driving too slowly – although there is no minimum limit on most roads for driving slowly, if the police believe you’re causing a hazard, you can be charged.

– I have to be exceeding the speed limit by more than 10mph to be punished – although this is guidance from The National Police Chiefs Council it is not written in stone. A police officer or a speed camera can ticket you for much smaller infractions.

– You were unaware that the speed limit was lower for a car towing a caravan – unfortunately, ignorance of the law is no defence. You could still be charged.

– I didn’t see any camera warning signs on the mobile speed camera van that booked me – there is no legal requirement for camera warning signs on these vans.

Some deluded drivers have even thought that a police officer has to be wearing their hat to book you! We’re not sure where this came from but it’s a complete urban myth. As long as they are recognisable as the police you are bang to rights!
Watch your speed. It’s much easier than you think to get your collar felt for it!
