Will Collision-Avoidance Technology Lead to Cheaper Car Insurance?

Technology is going so fast these days that it won’t be too long before cars driven by people are a thing of the past. And with drivers will disappear almost all collisions as the vast majority of road accidents are caused by human error. Naturally then, when the human is taken out of the equation, 99 times out of a hundred, so is the error. We’re not quite there yet but we’re definitely on our way.

In the meantime, however, cars are definitely getting safer and we’ve now reached the point where new vehicles are routinely able to avoid collisions for you, or at the very least mitigate the seriousness of the impact of any collision that occurs.

These days, bizarre though it still seems, your car is able to sense other vehicles and pedestrians, to anticipate collisions, and to automatically engage the brakes or make corrective or preventative steering manoeuvres.

The collision-avoidance systems used by modern cars include forward-collision warning systems that alert you to hazards ahead of you and steering assist, which helps with distances and directional stability. Add the use of radars, lasers and cameras and you can see that technology is totally changing the way we drive. The good news is that these systems are improving and becoming more and more easily affordable and therefore more common in all cars.

Will Premiums Come Down?

So in this futuristic world where computers give cars the ability to think and act for themselves, making it possible for you to avoid calling an accident claim company, an accident injury company or an accident recovery or car accident repair company in Birmingham or elsewhere, it must therefore follow that we’ll soon be seeing drastic reductions in our insurance premiums. It’s only logical. If we own a car that is fitted with a hi-tech accident-avoidance system, then our insurance has to cost less.

Well, that’s what you would think. In reality, it may not actually be that way.

Although one report in Israel last year showed that for owners of private vehicles fitted with collision-avoidance features, insurance claim frequency dropped by around 45%, most insurers have still not got round to offering a discount for drivers with these hi-tech vehicles.

So why aren’t insurance companies accepting that collision-avoidance technology reduces accident risk and reducing premiums accordingly?

Many insurance companies themselves are claiming that there hasn’t been enough research conducted yet. For others it’s clearly a case of greed on the part of insurance companies. With fewer claims being made, it’s clear that if insurance cover costs remain the same, then insurance companies are going to end up with greater margins and higher profits.

One other potential consequence of new collision-avoidance technology is that it could cut down on the number of fraudulent claims made to insurance companies. This will mean that insurance companies are making more money than ever before and may – when added to the increasing amount of evidence of the efficaciousness of the new technology, eventually persuade insurance companies to drive down premiums.
We can but hope.
