Five Tips to Deal with Accidents on the Motorway

Whilst the risk of an accident on the motorway is relatively small, there has been an increase in motorway accident claims in recent years. Thankfully they are few and far between, however, it is essential for any road user to know what to do in the event of an accident, which can range from minor to serious. Here are five tips to deal with accidents on the motorway, should you be faced with this relatively rare occurrence.

  1. If you are in an accident, it is essential that you let other road users know, by using your hazard lights to warn other drivers. If you are approaching an accident and need to slow down suddenly, warn other drivers by turning on your hazard lights.
  2. Never put yourself in danger and always stay at the scene – if you are in an accident, it is imperative that, if you are uninjured, you check for other injuries and alert the emergency services. People who aren’t injured should move away from the road, provided it is safe to do so. The SOS emergency phones stand out as they are bright orange.
  3. It is important to remember that if you are in an accident with another party, you should both exchange contact details. This is imperative, should you need to consult an accident claim company, or a vehicle claim company. However, it is essential for insurance purposes. Always ensure that you obtain the full details of any witnesses as this may help your insurance claim, or motorway accident claim.
  4. Never drive your car after an accident unless it is safe to do so as this could invalidate any claim that you make. However, most importantly, if the car isn’t safe, you are putting yourself and other road users in danger unnecessarily.  Your insurance provider can usually arrange for your car to be recovered, and many provide a courtesy car – check your details to see precisely what your insurance policy covers.
  5. If you are in an accident, you may be able to make a motorway accident claim – there are a variety of accident claim companies in Birmingham who can assist you.

Whilst the above covers the basics, there are other things you should do if you witness an accident.

  • Turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers
  • If you can see one within close proximity, the motorway SOS phones give the operator your exact location. However, if you can’t find one, don’t panic – call the emergency services and tell them the location. It is important to tell the emergency services if you can see if anyone is injured and they may ask you if you think there are any serious injuries
  • Try to assess how many people are hurt so that enough assistance can be provided
  • Move uninjured persons away from the roadside
  • If you have any medical training, you can assist with any injuries provided you are trained in at least first aid.
  • Reassure and comfort those that are injured until help arrives.
