Some of the UK’s Most Dangerous Roads

Road accidents are the most common type of accident in the UK and due to busy roads, increased traffic and continually broken speeds, these roads are becoming more common for accidents that unfortunately prove fatal.

The most dangerous road in the UK is currently the A285 between Chichester and Petworth, which include link roads onto the A27 and A272 and in 2012-2014 caused 23 fatal accidents. Incidents like this are often influenced through collisions caused by overtaking vehicles including head on accidents involving lorries. Vehicles are also often found to collide at junctions and vehicles running off the road. Not only does this endanger the driver and passengers, but also the surrounding road users. As a result of this, many collisions have caused consequential fatalities to unsuspecting pedestrians, making the incidents even more tragic.

Two more dangerous stretches of roads that have been recorded as some of the UK’s most dangerous are the A18 between Laceby and Ludborough and the A17 between Blackpool and Lancaster. Recently the number of fatal incidents has spiked from 24 to 28 across these two roads.

Here are some of the statistics that the RSF have produced about the UK’s most dangerous roads:

  • The highest rate of death and serious injury on UK roads is in the South East of England
  • The largest cause of serious injury is at junctions (33%)
  • Risk of a serious accident on a single carriageway road is 8 times greater than a motorway and 3 times the risk of dual carriageways
  • The financial cost of dealing with fatal and serious injury on UK roads is £6.4 billion on local authority A roads, £2 billion on strategic A roads and £0.9 billion on motorways

In an attempt to combat this problem, the amount of road signs indicating high and medium level road risks have increased significantly to ensure safety measures are recorded and evident for drivers. However, the RSF (Road Safety Foundation) have confirmed that these road acknowledgements are not enough to eradicate dangerous driving and something more needs to be done to create a safe driving environment.

Interestingly, where road authorities have taken some moderate action, there has been a 70% reduction in serious accidents recorded on the UK’s 10 most improved roads. As well as reduction in the loss of life, this has also saved the UK economy around £400 million. This is encouraging but there’s still a lot to do to make our roads safer and much investment is needed.
